I started walking more when we moved out here, we're on the edge of a subdivision and I walk along there everyday for a couple miles. I met Miss Lucy while out walking and she already knew who I was (No one stays unknown for very long around here. Did I tell you how I went to my new ward and they already knew me too? "Yes, You're Sister Anderson? Welcome to God's Country" and how I've been to church 2.5 times and already pretty much have a calling?). She heard I liked walking from my f.i.l. and went out of her way to meet me. Now we try to get together almost every day and walk for about two miles and she really keeps me going! I am surprised at how fast she walks!
Miss Lucy just moved here from WV, a widow only knowing her one daughter so she's been looking for some people who share her interests and I just love her. She's got energy and spunk and gets around so well. She walks everyday and goes to the gym, and motivating me enough to keep with walking and working out a getting on a good work-out schedule.
My favorite part about her is she has a really positive attitude, she's known her share of pain, but she is really upbeat and enjoyable to be around. She talked with me about how it was such a huge change for her to move from WV where she lived her whole life and moved here where she knew a few people. I think there have been times when she's been real lonely, but she is all about having a good attitude. She is a joy.
I don't have any pictures of her, but if I do I'll be sure to share - it's surprising how little she is - she make me feel like I'm the tallest person around if that give you any clue to how petite she is.
*Everyone older around here is Miss Lucy or Miss Ruth (single, married, widowed, divorced or not it's Miss) and in church is Sister Diane, or Sister So and So. I love it, I love titles so I love this tradition because it gives respect, but also closeness. I am so teaching my kids this (it's kind of a pet peeve of mine when kids call adults by their first name)

Wow, that's really sweet she went out of her way to meet you. I love old people like that, that still have so much life and spunk in them. That's cool about the whole Miss thing. When I was working, all the black kids would call teachers Ms. then our first name. At the school, everyone just went by their first names, but they always added the Ms. I always thought that was cool. I'm glad you're liking it there!
Love it. Sounds like you're having a great time in NC =)
I'm with you about the kids calling adults by their first names. But the addition of Miss is a great solution. And how fun for you to have such a great walking partner! I'm so jealous. I really wish I could find one. :) She sounds wonderful.
I want one! This is totally a movie-story. Like Evelyn Couch and Ninny Threadgoode!
I'm with you on the name thing, too. Betsy is just getting old enough to handle attaching Sister or Brother to the front of names. Last names are usually more syllables, and she hasn't quite got the concept of first & last names down perfect, but I'm hoping to introduce it soon.
that's so awesome! We have an older black cast member named Rita who plays the mom in the show...she said as her introduction "If you're under the age of 50, you can call me MISS Rita" lol..I love that you have a walking buddy!
I love it! I'm glad you've made a friend out there! :) It sounds like people are so much more friendly on the East coast, or maybe it's just in the South! :) Well, I love ya, and miss you and it's fun to hear that you're meeting such wonderful people out there, it really is a different life!
Growing up in MD, I too called people "Miss." It was natural! I'm also teaching my son that but feel like it's weird... maybe it's the Seattle ambiance that makes it feel weird? I didn't realize it was a locale thing.
